Due to releases from the Crimean “Titan”, located near the administrative border with the mainland of Ukraine, residents of the two districts of the Kherson region (Kalanchatsky and Chaplynsky) also fell into the contamination zone. People complained about their bad state of health, they were told that metal objects were covered with a sticky rust. The fact of chemical pollution from the territory of the occupied Crimea was fixed by border guards.
There are two versions of what had happened on the “Titan”, located in the occupied territory in the Crimea. One is that the accident had happened due to the acid storage of the “Titan” (half of it is on the mainland and the other half is on the peninsula), another version is that those are emissions from this enterprise.
The Kherson Regional State Administration states that the version of the acid storage is not confirmed and tends to believe that the problem is in Titan’s emissions. The enterprise hadn’t stopped its work, says chairman of the Kherson Regional Administration Andriy Gordeyev at the meeting with the local community in Kalanchak on Sept. 7. From the territory of the Kherson region journalists also have witnessed the smoke from the facility’s pipes.
On September 5, an interagency group, consisting of key officials from Kyiv, alongside representatives of Regional State Administration and journalists were heading to the village, whose residents complained about a bad state of health. There were also 4 teams of doctors from the regional center. They examined children in schools and kindergartens. The problem is that, although people were complaining about their health, in hospitals there were no patients with the corresponding symptoms. Doctors urged not to panic, and visit the hospitals. On the first day, 15 children were hospitalized. Doctors decided to examine them in the regional center’s hospital. However, despite the calls from the authorities and the assurances that there is no cause for alarm, the people en masse had begun to stop letting their children to school.
Experts selected samples of soil, water, samples of patina, but to examine them will take time, and the trustworthy information from Crimea can’t be obtained.
On September 6, in the Kherson region, on the administration of the border with the temporarily occupied Crimea, checkpoints “Kalanchak” and “Chaplynka” temporarily stopped their work due to the ecological situation in Crimea. Here, only the border guards, who would let in and out people and transport solely in urgent cases, have left. In Genichesk district, between mainland Ukraine and the occupied Crimea, only one checkpoint ”Chongar” has left.
Late in the evening on the same day, on September 6, the Regional Commission on Technogenic-Ecological Safety and Emergencies in the Kherson Oblast was going to meet at the Regional State Administration. The decision was made: to treat the children from possible contamination zone in local recreation camps. The authorities continue to insist that currently, the situation is not critical, they’re working in a proactive dynamics.
As it became known on Sept. 7, children from villages in 4 territorial communities in Kalanchatsky and Chaplynsky districts of the region will be stationed in two facilities in the resort Skadovsk, on the Black Sea coast. They also decided to suggest twenty pregnant women set off to the resort for a few weeks. The youngest kids will go to the camps with their mothers. Children will be taken away by school buses today.
Now, the region is waiting for the results of the test which are conducted by experts. People are following up the information from which direction the wind blows and hoping that the “Titan” will stop its work.
