European Commissioner for Justice Vera Yourova sent a letter to the head of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation, Alexander Konovalov, calling for a review of the case and the release of Ukrainian director, political prisoner Oleg Sentsov. This is reported by Hromadske.
“I urge you to reconsider this case for humanitarian reasons and in view of Russia’s international human rights obligations and the release of Mr Sentsov,” the letter reads.
She added that “such a gesture will send a strong signal to the world about Russia’s commitment to respect international law and human rights.”
Also, the European Commissioner called for the access of Sentsov to the Ukrainian authorities and the ombudsman.
“In anticipation of Mr Sentsov’s release, I urge you to provide access to it to Ukrainian officials, including the ombudsman of Ukraine,” she said in a letter.
On September 11, Ukrainian ombudsman Lyudmila Denisova said that Sentsov has hypoxia.
