The decree of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, which introduces the decision of the National Security and Defense Council to terminate the treaty on friendship between Ukraine and Russia, came into force, writes Ukrainska Pravda.
In particular, the treaty on friendship, cooperation and partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, signed on May 31, 1997, terminates. According to the decree of the president, now the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine should declare Russia about Ukraine’s desire to put an end to this treaty and to submit to Poroshenko a draft law on the termination of the agreement. The Foreign Ministry also has to inform the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and other international organizations about Ukraine’s desire to put an end to the treaty on friendship with Russia and the reasons for its cessation.
According to the treaty, the principle of strategic partnership, recognition of the inviolability of the existing borders, respect for territorial integrity and mutual commitment to not use their territory to the detriment of the security of the other party was established between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
