NATO does not need Moscow’s permission for Ukraine to join the power bloc. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in an interview with the agency of the AP before the meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in New York.
“Only Ukraine can determine its own path, whether it wants to join NATO or not. As a result, 29 allies and Ukraine will decide whether Ukraine meets the standards necessary for joining NATO,” Stoltenberg said. In addition, the NATO Secretary General expressed concern about Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine and Georgia, the Russian support of Assad regime in Syria, and the build-up of Russian naval forces in the eastern Mediterranean.
