During his speech at the 73rd session of UN General Assembly, the President of Ukraine stated that the deployment of a peacekeeping operation under the UN mandate in the Donbas may be a determining factor that will put an end to the suffering of the Ukrainian people. The president also said that according to the UN’s most cautious estimates, the number of victims in the Russian-Ukrainian war has reached about 35,000, including 10,000 deaths. More details – in reactions from Opinion.

In particular, Petro Poroshenko stressed that the appeal of Ukraine on the deployment of a UN peacekeeping mission in the occupied Donbas region still hasn’t been satisfied. The President stressed that we are considering this as a test for our Organization’s ability to solve complex conflict situations. The test that the UN has to pass.

Later on, the president also added that the introduction of a UN peacekeeping mission could be an effective instrument that would force Russia to comply fully with the Minsk accords.

Moreover, as the press secretary of the Ukrainian President Svyatoslav Tseholko said, the Kremlin is scared. It is afraid of peacekeepers, who will see Russian soldiers and military equipment throughout all occupied territory. They are also afraid of losing control over Ukrainian-Russian border area, which Moscow needs to secure a constant infiltration of its troops to the Donbas, according to Poroshenko.

However, political expert Olexiy Minakov is convinced that Putin won’t let a UN peacekeeping mission in the Donbas, because he needs the occupied region, as a lever of pressure and influence on the Western countries. In other words, for Putin to withdraw his troops from the Donbas means to betray “Russian world” and it’s equal to death. Therefore, according to the expert, there is only one effective way to end the war as soon as possible. It is to make it as unprofitable and burdensome for Russia as possible by using strict sanctions that would send Russia’s economy to knockout.

However, political scientist Mykhailo Basarab emphasized that combining peacekeepers and Minsk agreements is some kind of schizophrenia, because it is necessary to make a choice: either you are a “victorious president”, or you are “the president of the concessions to Russia”.

The actor and volunteer Myroslav Hai called for the deployment of the UN peacekeeping troops in the Donbas, saying that even if they get cold feet, we’re still ready to give the enemy a fight back. So, dear UN, welcome, maybe you will even be protected.

But there are other thoughts. For example,  the Crimea for some reason wasn’t mentioned, as if it was “set aside”. Secondly, the United Nations peacekeeping mission simply can’t be anything but a result of compromises. And if it was possible to do it without concessions and compromises, then there would be no need for peacekeepers.

And by the way, at the end of this little reaction, the president celebrates his birthday today. And, according to the political adviser and ex-deputy Viktor Ukolov, instead of having a rest, he has a dozen talks and official speeches at the UN. Five years ago President Yanukovych was given a yacht and a golden bread on that day. So, be able to compare and make your own choices, my darlings, see you soon at the same place!
