President Petro Poroshenko dismissed the head of the Ministry of Defense Stepan Poltorak from military service. Poroshenko stated this on October, 13 during a speech at the solemn events of honoring the military of Ukraine. The Head of State also informed that Poltorak will continue to carry out the leadership of the Ministry of Defense in as a civilian minister, reports Ukrainska Pravda.
As the president said, “dismissal from military service is not a punishment or indicative of a poor work.” “According to the requirements of the law on national security, the post of Minister of Defense of Ukraine should be occupied by a civilian from January 1, 2019. On this basis, Stepan Poltorak submitted the relevant report (on dismissal- ed.), And I accepted it”, said Poroshenko. He added that the law is co-ordinated with Ukraine’s partners in NATO and such a procedure is foreseen, but “the decision is fully in line with the spirit and letter of the law.”
