Deputies from the “Bloc of Petro Poroshenko” Mykola Palamarchuk, Arthur Palatny and Oleg Velikin want to introduce criminal liability for slander. The corresponding Bill 9306 of their authorship is registered in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukrainska Pravda reports.
According to the explanatory note, “recently in Ukraine, freedom of speech has increasingly been confused with pervasive spread of… false facts.”
“One of the latest cases of spreading false information is the case of accusations made by some media against the people’s deputy (Mykola Palamarchuk – ed.) On involvement in the commission of a particularly serious crime (assault on public activist Kateryna Handzyuk),” says in the text of the explanatory note.
The authors of the bill propose to fix the penalty for defamation in the Criminal Code, from a fine of 200-500 non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens (UAH 3400-8500) and correctional labour or up to 3 years of imprisonment.
