US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Washington condemns Russia’s actions against Ukraine and “urges the Presidents Poroshenko and Putin to have direct contact to resolve this situation.” This is stated in a statement by Pompeo regarding an attack on Ukrainian military vessels in the Kerch Strait, reports Voice of America.
“The United States expresses its deep concern over the incident in the Black Sea, which took place on November 25, when Ukrainian ships tried to pass through the Kerch Strait. A message that Russian ships were ramming and firing Ukrainian ships, wounding a Ukrainian crew, and seizing three ships, is a serious exacerbation and violation of international norms,” the statement said.
“The United States condemns these aggressive actions of Russia. We call on the Russian Federation to return its vessels and detained crew members to Ukraine and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, including its territorial waters,” the State Department noted.
At the same time, the Office urged both sides to exercise restraint and to comply with international obligations. “We call on the Presidents Poroshenko and Putin to have direct contact to resolve this situation, and we, therefore, insist on the support of the Normandy format.
