The passing week is reminiscent of the pictures of Hieronymus Bosch. The painter painted this picture 500 years ago in the Netherlands, but it so accurately describes present-day Ukraine: Nasirov wants to get back to the position of the head of the SFS, the Kyiv court decided that NABU intervened to the American elections, and in Ukraine, there was a “spy scandal”. But in this festival of absurdity, there were some glimpses of intelligence. What exactly – read in the traditional digest of Opinion.
Hieronymus Bosch is a Dutch artist, one of the greatest masters of the Northern Renaissance. In his multi-figured compositions, paintings on the themes of folklore, proverbs and parables combined sophisticated medieval science fiction, created by an infinite imagination with folk-satirical and educational trends, with unusual, for the art of his era, realistic innovations.
Kyiv District Administrative Court has reinstated Roman Nasirov in the position of the head of the State Fiscal Service. The probable reason is a violation of the procedure during his release by the Cabinet. Nasirov is charged with malpractice in the office and falsification due to unlawful instructions to the heads of regional and territorial offices of the SFS to postpone the tax debt for the companies of the escapee deputy Oleksandr Onishchenko. The process is still not finished. The investigation believes that such decisions caused the state’s losses of almost 2 billion UAH. Nasirov and his defense deny these charges.
Nasirov has already stated that he plans to take on the leadership of SFS again and to start fighting the “shadow economy” and smuggling. And he is going to run for the presidency. Apparently, he has got sunstroke.
Meanwhile, social networks have already started to joke around the failed judicial reform. “We are expecting the court to reinstate Yanukovych or Stalin,” Ukrainians made jokes on Facebook.
But it is no joke when we recall that his successor in the SFS is another well-known lover of embezzlement and purchases of property in Turkey, Myroslav Prodan. During the week the official failed to comply with the court’s decision to put on him an electronic bracelet because there were no free bracelets. Poor little thing had to walk with “naked” legs. SAPO suspects Myroslav Prodan of receiving 89 million UAH while working as an Acting Deputy Head and the Head of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine from July 2016 to June 2018.
It is reported that on this money Prodan bought two apartments in Kyiv for 6.7 million, two houses in Turkey for 78 million and 3 high-performance car for 3.4 million hryvnias, but licensed them in the name of a close person.
Now the readers can really feel what their taxes are spent on in the State Fiscal Service.
The SBU has confirmed that the relatives of spy Semochko have citizenship of the Russian Federation. On October 26 the Counterintelligence Department reported, that his wife and daughter have Russian passports. He has already been accused of a possible high treason. The case is filed according to the statement of journalists who found out, that his relatives have Russian citizenship. His family allegedly owns three houses priced at 8 million USD, and his relatives have Russian passports.
According to the journalists, Semochko’s relatives are constantly traveling from Kyiv to the annexed Crimea. Semochko himself said that he has no relation to the houses near Kyiv that cost millions of dollars, and his wife is a citizen of Ukraine.
However, spy games have a completely pragmatic basis. According to insider information, it was Semochko who was supposed to replace Hrytsak as the head of the Security Service of Ukraine. Among other candidates, several months ago, according to the Telegram-channel Newsroom, were the almost forgotten former prosecutor Vitalii Yarema and ex-chief officer of the SBU’s counterintelligence and the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine Valerii Kondratiuk, who now holds the position of the Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine on security issues.
According to journalists, Hrytsak still does not lose the opportunity to “finish off the enemy”: after a reputation scandal, the SBU filed a case on the high treason of Semochko.
At the same time, the question of Hrytsak’s resignation, which has been discussed in the PA at least during the last six months, is still unresolved. The main reason is the hesitation of Petro Poroshenko, whether it is worth changing the SBU’s head on the eve of the election at all. What has Hrytsak done is unknown for sure but is Semochko really a better option?
Kyiv District Administrative Court (the living legend of the Ukrainian Themis) recognized that the actions of the head of NABU Artem Sytnyk and People’s Deputy Serhii Leshchenko regarding the disclosure of information about Paul Manafort were illegal. In particular, the court found Sytnyk’s and Leshchenko’s actions of disclosure of information on the existence of Manafort’s surname and signatures in the lists of “second set of books of the Party of Regions” in the pre-trial investigation materials as illegal.
Because of this, Manafort was forced to leave the campaign headquarters of the presidential candidate of the US Donald Trump.”
“At the first glance, such an absurdity can only be commented with a joke, because if there was a violation of the law (that is, interference with the US elections), it should be investigated by US law enforcement agencies, and not by the Kyiv District Administrative Court,” added the People’s Deputy Leshchenko.
According to Leshchenko, such a decision is intended to:
“First of all to use it against the head of the NABU Artem Sytnyk in the framework of the audit. Recognition of the actions of Sytnyk as ‘illegal’ will help puppet auditors to make a decision on his release,” he wrote.
“Secondly, the recognition of Sytnyk’s actions as ‘illegal’ is subjected to American elections, and thus the scriptwriters from Bankova will try to reduce the negativity of Sytnyk’s release among diplomats,” added Leshchenko.
The third reason, according to the People’s Deputy, is Poroshenko’s attempt to earn additional loyalty in the administration of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, so that he “turn a blind eye to possible violations during the presidential elections and the use of administrative resources, so that the ruling corrupt officials retain their power.”
An absurd, but the threat of impeachment is still haunting Tramp. The Democratic Party initiated this process and, in spite of Bankova’s efforts to play with Trump, it is unlikely that Ukraine will get any benefit from it.
But in the all-Ukrainian festival of absurdity, there are some glimpses of intelligence, courage, and honor. The European Parliament awarded the Ukrainian director, a political prisoner Oleg Sentsov with a prize For Freedom of Thought named after Sakharov. His cousin Natalia Kaplan received the award for him. In Strasbourg, she made a speech and read a letter from Oleg Sentsov.
“You can call for coming to terms and surrender, but you can, on the contrary, call for resisting and fighting, even when there is no chance of survival, but there is only a chance to die… I hope that I will still be able to do something in order to feel that I deserve this. Thank you,” said Sentsov in his letter.
Meanwhile, seized military sailors in Moscow refused to testify and demanded to be recognized as prisoners of war. Every day, agents come to them under the guise of lawyers and try to convert them and get the information. But the guys stay strong and the youngest prisoner, Andrii Eider, even made them turn the “Russian Radio” off in the Investigation Cell. He has shrapnel in his leg, and other prisoners help him walk. But he does not give up. And we have something to learn from him.
