On January 11, the law which enhances responsibility for sexual offenses and domestic violence came into force, UNIAN reports.
It is about the Law on Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine in connection with the ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on the Prevention of Violence against Women and Domestic Violence and the fight against these phenomena (No. 4952), adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on December 6, 2017.
The law implements the provisions of the Istanbul Convention in national law, which makes it possible to improve the criminal and criminal-procedural legislation of Ukraine to combat violence against women and domestic violence. The document introduces criminal liability for domestic violence and forced marriage.
It is also established that domestic violence, that is, the deliberate systematic act of physical, psychological or economic violence against present or former spouse or other person with whom the perpetrator is in family or intimate relationship, which leads to physical or psychological suffering, disabilities, emotional dependence or deterioration in the quality of life of the victim, are punished by public works for a term of 150 to 240 hours, or arrest for a term of up to 6 months, or imprisonment for up to 5 years.
