The treaty on a friendship between Ukraine and Russia has lapsed. According to the Law on the Termination of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, from April 1, 2019, the document lapses.
The treaty on a friendship between Ukraine and Russia was signed in 1997 by the President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma and Russian President Boris Yeltsin. The parties pledged to respect the territorial integrity and confirmed the inviolability of the existing borders between them. The treaty was signed for a term of ten years, and in 2008 its action was automatically prolonged.
In view of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, which is a violation of this treaty, in December 2018 a law that terminates its operation was passed.
