American diplomats say that Ukraine risks losing donor funding from foreign partners if it does not amend the Mine Action Act. The press service of the US Embassy in Ukraine reports.
“Mines are the threat number 1 for the population of eastern Ukraine, and the Verkhovna Rada has to approve an amendment that will allow direct donor funding for mine action operators. Otherwise, Ukraine risks losing donor funding, which will put more lives at risk,” the diplomatic mission statement said on Twitter.
On March 20, British Ambassador to Ukraine Judith Hoff warned that all international humanitarian demining efforts in Ukraine would be under threat if the Verkhovna Rada did not promptly approve minor amendments to the new law on mine clearance. Otherwise, according to her, humanitarian work will be stopped.
