The European Union called Putin’s decree on the issuing of the passports in certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions as yet another encroachment on Ukraine’s sovereignty.
“The timing of such a decision immediately after the presidential election in Ukraine, which demonstrated Ukraine’s strong commitment to democracy and the rule of law, demonstrates Russia’s intention to further destabilize Ukraine and exacerbate the conflict,” the statement reads.
The EU expects Russia to refrain from actions that contradict the Minsk Agreements and will not prevent full reintegration of uncontrolled Ukrainian government territories.
In Brussels, they stressed that all parties should fully comply with their obligations under the Minsk Agreements. “The European Union remains firm in supporting the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” the EU said.
