Law enforcers investigate whether there were statements by President Petro Poroshenko, Justice Minister Pavlo Petrenko and the chairman of the National Bank Yakiv Smoliy on nationalization of Privatbank for pressure on judges.
According to the District Administrative Court of Kyiv, after reviewing the statement of its judges, the General Prosecutor’s Office provided information to the UDRP and initiated a pre-trial investigation into the possibility of interference in the activities of judges by senior officials during the NSDC meeting on April 18, 2019. The proceedings were opened according to Part 2 of Art. 376 Criminal Code of Ukraine (interference with the activity of judicial bodies)
The judges of the panel, who made a decision on privatization of Privatbank, requested the Prosecutor General’s Office and the State Bureau to investigate the pre-trial investigation on the head of state, the Minister of Justice and the head of the NBU – and bring them to criminal responsibility. Judges believe that the state’s leadership, commenting on their decision to recognize the illegal nationalization of Privatbank, made statements that are a direct threat to the Ukrainian judicial system, an encroachment on its independence and impartiality.
