Council of Europe has returned Russia its right to vote in Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which it was deprived of because of the illegal annexation of Crimea.
Therefore, Russia will be able to form a delegation for participation in the plenary meeting of PACE at the end of June, as a matter of urgency. At this meeting, a new secretary general of the Council of Europe and a few judges of the European Court of Human Rights should be elected. The document stresses that all member-states of CE should have the right to take part in the work of the Council of Europe and PACE on equal terms.
“It’s good that we’ve agreed on Russia staying in the Parliamentary Assembly and in Council of Europe, in particular, because it keeps the right of millions of Russians to turn to the European Court of Human Rights,” stated German minister of foreign affairs Heiko Maas.
