The Venice Commission, which is an advisory body to the Council of Europe, going to verify the law on the functioning of the Ukrainian language as a state language for compliance with European values and standards. This is stated in a message posted on the Council of Europe website.
Such a check was asked for by the head of the PACE Monitoring Committee. “By letter dated May 22, the head of the monitoring committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe invited the Venice Commission’s opinion on the law of Ukraine” On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian as a state language,” the text says.
The Venice Commission (officially called the European Commission for Democracy through Law) analyzes and concludes wether the draft laws are in line with European standards and European values. It is an advisory body to the Council of Europe.
