The UN Tribunal has obliged Russia to release captured sailors. The Permanent Tribunal, established in accordance with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, provided Ukraine with a key requirement in the case of the interim measures to be taken by Russia. This is the decision of the tribunal, announced on Saturday in Hamburg.
The key provisions of the document were read by the chairman of the tribunal, Judge Pak Zhin Hion.
Among other things, the court ordered Russia to immediately release Ukrainian sailors and allow them to return to Ukraine. It should be noted that the official representative of the Russian Federation was absent at the hearing; the Russian side also refused to provide its materials for the hearing, but the United Nations Conventional Law still has to comply with its decisions.
In the absence of a representative of the Russian Federation, the tribunal used the official position of Russia regarding events near the Kerch Strait.
