The Kremlin is not going to change the position regarding the possibility of release of 24 Ukrainian sailors: they will remain in custody, despite the decision of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea on the benefit of Ukraine. This was stated by the press-secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov.

He insists that the investigation should end with respect to Ukrainians “in connection with violation of the law on the border” and a court hearing will be held. On May 25, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea supported the lawsuit of Ukraine and ordered Russia to immediately release 3 Ukrainian naval ships and 24 members of their crews.

Ukraine expects Russia to comply quickly and fully with the Tribunal’s order. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry emphasizes that Russia has violated the basic principle of the immunity of warships
