Just caught the breath after elections and here we are. Ukrainian politics resumes active work on the eve of parliamentary elections: Poroshenko conducts rebranding of the party “Solidarity” and due to Zelensky’s decree Saakashvili makes a successful comeback to Ukraine with a nearly minus rating. Meanwhile, the President is waiting and watching how mastodonts fight for the prospect seats in the Parliament.
Petro Poroshenko’s party was renamed to “European Solidarity” and they promised new faces. Even the rumours started circulating that Kononenko and Granovsky left the organization.
The reason for rebranding – rating at the level of statistical error in “Petro Poroshenko Bloc”.
Poroshenko also joined the new party and promised new faces: volunteers and bloggers. Will it help in several months? Poroshenko has already proved that he can show incredible results: with the rating lower than 10% he managed to double it and go to the second round.
However, the situation is even worse in the “People’s Front”. The party of ex-prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, until the end of the week, negotiated with Groysman about the merger with his party “Ukrainian Strategy” but eventually Groysman refused. The idea of two businessmen with experience has not received the initiative after fresh sociology. And there is the same statistical error among the chances of getting into the Сouncil.
Now the “People’s Front” with a stably impassable rating seriously thinks to overlap with plurality voting without a list. Moreover, some of them are going to stand under someone else’s banners. Several deputies can be taken by Petro Poroshenko Bloc and Groysman, the rest by Tymoshenko.
“In the pro-Russian camp, the peace temporarily settled down. According to the sources, for the common cause, Akhmetov supporters made up with Medvedchuk ones. And they divided the list by three: one-third is Akhmetov’s, one-third – Boyko’s and Lyovochkin’s, and another one third – Rabinovich’s and Medvedchuk’s. In other words, they were divided fraternally: two-thirds – Akhmetov’s, one – Medvedchuk’s. Now they are all afraid of the electorally close party “Bad Genes” (in the first five – odious mayors Gennadiy Trukhanov and Gennadiy Kernes),” the telegram channel The Newsroom writes.
Only in Volodymyr Zelensky’s headquarters, they are pleased with previous forecasts. They are talking about 44% and the sole formation of a coalition. Wait for the League of Laughter dictatorship since Zelensky’s scene ex-partners have already announced their political ambitions.
And while deputies sneakily solve their issues, Ukraine is confidently gaining its victory on the international arena.
The United Nations International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea obliged Russia to immediately release captured seamen in the Kerch Strait. Thus, the International Court upheld the lawsuit of Ukraine (19 votes for, 2 against).
According to the court’s decision, 3 ships and 24 crew members are subject to immediate release.
The tribunal noted that the Ukrainian side tried to negotiate with the aggressor in full, but unsuccessfully, so the possibilities for peaceful settlement of the dispute were exhausted.
Ukraine’s lawsuit said that the dispute arose as a result of the illegal capture of the Ukrainian warships “Berdyansk”, “Nikopol”, “Yany Kapu” with sailors who returned to Odesa after the unsuccessful attempt to cross the Kerch Strait on November 25, 2018.
The Foreign Ministry noted that Russia violated the basic principle of the immunity of warships, guaranteed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea because the ships were captured in the territorial waters of Ukraine. Russia didn’t participate in the hearings. There, they qualify the actions of Ukraine as military, but they contradict themselves because the court of the aggressor refused to recognize our sailors as prisoners of war.
According to Zelensky, the release of seamen will be a signal from the leadership of Russia “about a real readiness to stop the conflict with Ukraine.”
“Thus, Russia can make a step towards unlocking the negotiations and solving problems created by it in a civilized way. We’ll see what way the Kremlin will choose. Anyway, we anticipate our guys at home,” he said.
But the Kremlin is not going to change the position regarding the possibility of releasing 24 Ukrainian sailors: they will remain in custody, despite the decision of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. Moreover, this week the Russian court rejected all appeals concerning keeping the seamen in the detention centre.
Former head of the Odesa Regional State Administration, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili returned to Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelensky with his decree restored Mikheil Saakashvili’s Ukrainian citizenship.
He already thanked Zelensky, “Thank you, President Zelensky! Glory to Ukraine!” Saakashvili wrote on Facebook and a day later flew to Boryspil from Warsaw.
The customs officers let the newly-minted Ukrainian but the numerous fans didn’t let ex-president of Georgia for about an hour.
“I came here not to revenge, punish someone or ruin. To ruin and revenge is not my style at all. Together with millions of Ukrainians, the new president and his team. I came back to do what I could do best, to build what I was not allowed in Odesa. I want with millions of Ukrainians, after there was a historic chance, with the new president, with a new team, to participate in the construction of a new Ukraine,” he assured.
However, many experts doubt “Mikho the Builder”. It is believed that Zelensky had made this decision so that Poroshenko had to struggle not only with him but also Saakashvili – a very powerful media contender.
Will Saakashvili become the opposition to the incumbent president? It will become clear over time, which is no more than 1,5 months until the elections.
Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksandr Danilyuk eventually took the job… but the office was empty. On the captured video, you can see a room with empty spaces on the walls, holes under cables, and no less empty server, to which these cables lead. Danilyuk said that Poroshenko’s team stole the serves with secret data. Poroshenko’s team deny it.
The spokesman of ex-president Petro Poroshenko, Svyatoslav Tsegolko, explained that all this equipment was rented by Poroshenko at his own expense, and now it was returned to the owner.
“None of the confidential information has been kept on the servers, access to it was provided online. The room worked as a reflection of different informational sources but these sources remained on their places in The Border Guard Service, the SBU or the tax office,” he wrote on Facebook.
But a year ago, the deputy head of the administration Dmytro Shymkiv said in an interview that the equipment was purchased at state expense by the Central Election Commission and the NBU. Now the State Bureau of Investigations is learning whose “iron” it is and whether it contained secret information that could potentially reach the owner.
By the way, about honesty. The candidate to the post of the Prime-Minister of Great Britain, former Minister of Foreign Affairs Boris Johnson is to face the court for alleged Brexit lies. The obstinate eurosceptic said that the week spent in the EU cost the British 350 million pounds. The thesis has become dominant in the Brexit campaign but remained a lie. For misleading, Johnson can lose any political perspectives just as his ex-chair Theresa May.
In her emotional statement in Downing Street, Theresa May said that she had done her best to implement the results of the referendum in which the British voted for exit from the European Union.
“Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough,” May summed up and said that she left the office and the Conservative party. Brexit itself was repeatedly postponed.
Another political ambition was failed, however, on the other side of the world. The American court blocked a billion of dollars that the Pentagon has allocated for the construction of a 91-kilometre wall from its budget. In a 56-page resolution, Judge Haywood Gilliam from California stated that Donald Trump can’t use these funds without Congress approval.
To get this money Donald Trump had to impose a state of emergency in the country (doesn’t it look familiar?) and now he is under investigation.
Like it or not, political boomerang overtakes everyone, that’s why a stitch in time saves nine.
