If you are lucky enough to have a perfect, proportional and slender shape, scroll further. This article is not for you. Any swimsuit will look good on you, you don’t need stylist’s advice.
And let’s discuss with everyone else how a swimsuit can be useful in harmonizing our natural proportions and creating a good mood. Let’s be honest, the beach is a zone of increased stylish danger. We have so little tissue on and display so much of the open body to the world. That’s why a poorly chosen swimsuit is a complete disgrace. But if you choose the right swimsuit, there is a chance to argue with your own anatomy and really flatter your shape.
The most common problem faced by women when choosing a swimsuit is the imbalance of measurements. The measurement of hips does not correspond to the measurement of the chest. The top is one size, the bottom is another size. Sounds familiar? It’s not your body’s problem and it’s not your fault that you don’t meet the standards of size charts. It’s a problem of producers, it is their task to consider your needs and to provide any shape with a good swimsuit.
Fortunately, a lot of brands have long understood this and fully abandoned the idea of selling a two-piece swimsuit as one product. They make a whole line of tops of different styles of the same fabric and a line of bottoms from the same fabric or from the one that goes well with it. This is a great opportunity from all points of view. Firstly, you can choose the model and size of the top and bottom that fit perfectly and you don’t need to compromise. And secondly, there is open space for imagination and stylish game. You don’t have to wear a red top only with a red bottom. You can play, mix a monochrome top with a printed bottom or vice versa. And the very brave ones can even combine two different prints in one swimsuit.
The combination of different colours of the top and bottom can be a very good idea not only for a stylish game but also for adjusting the proportions. Usually, light colours make the body visually a bit bigger and bulbous, and the dark ones on the contrary “collect” the body together and smooth out silhouette a little. Therefore, we need to wear light things on what we want to increase, and dark things on what we want to reduce. If you want to add volume to the chest, and tame thighs a little – wear a light top and a dark bottom. If you have a narrow pelvis and large breasts, do the opposite: put on a dark bra and bright bottoms.
If you have very broad athletic shoulders and narrow hips, “halter” top will look good on you. It is the one in which harnesses are diagonal and converge to the neck. This diagonal line visually narrows the shoulders a bit. You can try a one-piece swimsuit of this style, or, if you want to expand your hips a little, take a “halter” top and low-rise swimming briefs.
Another way to visually reduce the shoulders is to cut them with a diagonal line, but just one. Asymmetrical top decorated with a flounce or a wing on the shoulder is very trendy and suits many people. But if the breasts are small and the shoulders are wide, then this is just the perfect style.
Wings on the shoulders is generally a wonderful fashion trick, which, oddly enough, can be useful for women of different types. If you have very curvy shoulders and full arms; if arms are skinny, but you don’t want to show the area under your arms; if you get sunburned very quickly and want to protect your shoulders – in all these cases, wings on shoulders is a godsend. And besides, they visually narrow and emphasize the waist. There is no such a woman wouldn’t want it.
We’ve talked about broad shoulders, but what if you have the opposite: hips are wide and shoulders are narrow and the chest is small? Then you should not narrow the top with diagonal lines but rather spread them horizontally. Choose a swimsuit with open shoulders and a horizontal flounce, it will balance your silhouette. It can be a one-piece swimsuit or a top in the form of a flounce and a dark high-rise bottom.
One more advice for the owners of wide hips. Swimming briefs and swimsuits with high cuts on the sides, as in the photo on the left, lengthen your legs. But if your hips have “ears”, swimming briefs with low sides, as in the photo on the right, would be more useful for you. Choose yourself: either longer legs or more harmonious and smooth hip line.
And let’s speak a little about breasts. The more you open them, the bigger they will seem. Any V-shaped or rounded cutouts of the bodice make breasts visually bigger. Conversely, a closed horizontal bodice without cuts makes breasts smaller. Choose a bodice according to what your goal is: to make your breasts speak louder or silence them a little.
The hips and breasts are discussed. Now, let’s speak about the waist. Fortunately, a few years ago high-rise briefs became trendy again. And that’s great because swimming briefs to the waist accentuate it. And they also hide the tummy if you don’t want to show it. Even those who did not get out of the one-piece swimsuits for years, because they could not choose a bikini that would sit well on the hips, can try this option and finally enjoy the freedom in a two-piece swimsuit.
And a swimsuit with high-waisted bottoms is such a nice allusion to the touching retro. Even if you have the perfect six-pack and you look good in any bikini, you can try yourself in the role of a pin-up girl in a swimsuit so old-fashioned that it has again become acutely fashionable.
And finally – prints. All trendy prints for clothes are also relevant for swimwear. Polka dots, leopard, zebra – why not? Also, do not be afraid of stripes on swimsuits, even horizontal. The popular stereotype that horizontal stripes make you look bigger is just a stereotype. The stripes are not about orientation but the rhythm. Thin and abundant stripes don’t make you visually bigger, even if they are horizontal. Wide stripes can make you bigger even if they are vertical. And diagonal stripes are generally a secret weapon of the designer. A successful combination of diagonal stripes works wonders with the shape. Therefore if you see a swimsuit with diagonal stripes in the store – grab and run to try it on as soon as possible.
I wish you a wonderful summer and a good rest. And remember: there are no shapes that are not ready for the beach. There are bad suits and strange people who for some reason require others to be perfect. Now you know how to choose the right swimsuit, and these critics are not worth your attention.
