The pre-election delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has terminated its work in Ukraine ahead of time. The delegation of the PACE was in Kyiv on 2-3 July to assess the pre-election situation before the extraordinary parliamentary elections in Ukraine, which will take place on July 21.
The Assembly was reminded that in a letter dated July 2, the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada informed the President of the PACE, Lilian Mori Paskieu, that the Ukrainian parliament had withdrawn its invitation to observe the early elections.
“As a result of this decision, the electoral delegation decided to terminate its activities ahead of schedule,” the statement said.
It was noted that prior to the adoption of this decision, the delegation of the PACE met with leaders and representatives of several parties, representatives of civil society and the media, representatives of the mission of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (ODIHR) / OSCE) for electoral observation in Ukraine, as well as diplomats.
Other meetings were canceled.
