On July 10, the ship of the Black Sea Fleet of Russia “Smetlivyi” entered the closed for navigation area, where the shooting was conducted within the framework of the international exercise “Sea Breeze-2019”. Thus, the Russian Federation violated the norms of international maritime law and provoked an emergency situation in the Black Sea.
“So, despite the coastal message for seafarers about closing the area for conducting international exercises, the ship of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation “Smetilivyi” at about 8:00 am, provoking a dangerous situation, entered the closed area for navigation, where shootings exercises of the ship’s artillery were conducted by the international naval group coalition,” the press centre of the Naval Forces Command of Ukraine said.
It is noted that the Russian ship was interviewed by the frigate “Hetman Sagaydachny” in accordance with the international protocol but Russians simulated problems with communication.
“This fact is another reason for the international community not to perceive the Russian Federation as a predictable subject of international maritime law, systemic violations of which have become the norm of Russia’s behaviour in the Black Sea region,” the headquarters said.
