The 10th anniversary Odesa International Film Festival came to an end, so we have an opportunity to analyze both main red carpets – from the grand opening and closing of the festival. Every year it gets more and more pleasant to analyze these events from the style point of view since there are more and more good examples there. And even more people who don’t raise questions in your head like “Who are all these people and why are they here?”. Even if you still don’t recognize their faces, it doesn’t mean they don’t belong to the red carpet.
For example, a young Ukrainian actress Ivanna Sakhno. Her face might not yet be known to every Ukrainian, but she has already managed to star in two blockbusters in Hollywood. And at the OIFF, Ivanna was a member of the jury of the international program. For the opening of the festival, she chose a very interesting white dress with a complex skirt, vaguely reminiscent of the silhouettes of the 18th century. The laconic and yet not banal dress, sharp corners of the decoration on the neck that are repeated in the shape of a skirt, everything is carefully thought out but looks simple and nonchalant. And this is the elegant simplicity to emulate.
Or Anna Piskunova, a designer of a jewelry brand which presented its collection within the framework of the festival. Unlike Ivanna, Anna chose a very difficult image. A spectacular, asymmetrical one-shoulder dress with a large slit, a train, and a figure draped bodice could be a real challenge. Missing is easier than hitting when it comes to such a complex outfit. However, here the conquest of the obstinate dress was certainly successful. Light, almost invisible sandals and big, but very simple-shaped decoration on the neck are perfect complements to it. And everything is alright with who the dress it on – such can only embellish this bold skirt.
The deputy of the Odesa City Council Anna Pozdniakova may also be not familiar to the wide Ukrainian public. However, she had a perfect look on the red carpet. A very elegant combination of delicate pink lace and a tight black skirt. Craftsmanship collaborates with the shape. And although this dress is an absolute classic and would be appropriate in any year, lively casual hairstyle and relevant makeup make the image very modern.
Tetiana Vlasova, a PR-director of the festival also provided an example of successful images for the red carpet. Choosing the right dress is a difficult task. But the real skill is to refrain from hanging on extra jewelry if the dress does not need it. And this is the case. Large, but neutral-colored earrings correspond to trends but do not argue with the collar of the dress. The hairstyle is also in agreement with the dress, they work together on the silhouette in close cooperation. These details distinguish a merely beautiful dress from a harmonious and perfect image.
And now Ukraine has its own popular fashion bloggers with a huge audience on social networks. It is natural they are invited to such events, and it is very pleasing when they demonstrate how beautiful one can look on the red carpet by their own example. One of them is Diana Gloster. Delicate blue dress, modest and spectacular at the same time. The decoration of the belt resembles ancient mosaics, the draperies and the whole silhouette are incredibly similar to the chitons worn in Ancient Greece. This allusion is very suitable for Diana’s face features, and she was like a living Greek goddess in the middle of a modern city. The perfect combination of a woman and her image.
A blogger Alina Frendiy dressed in a completely different style. At the closing ceremony, she wore a very trendy dress with a deep V-neck, a bold slit and a train. But thanks to the long sleeves, reinforced shoulder line which adds the desired volume, as well as the well-designed shape of the neckline that does not show anything superfluous, the dress does not look vulgar, as much as vice versa. It is a perfect example of how lurex shimmer, cleavage, and open legs are not a stylish crime in themselves. The success of an image depends not so much on the dress as on the woman inside it.
And, and of course, more actresses. These are the faces that we recognize and expect to see at a film festival. And it’s good when they do not disappoint. A Ukrainian actress Natalia Vasko is always a great example of style. For the opening ceremony, she chose a no ordinary dress with lace, mesh, embroidery and volume applique. Such layering of decorative elements could turn into a complete disaster of bad taste. But not in this case. For, again, it is not the materials and forms themselves that are a threat to style, but their unfortunate and careless combination. Any decoration can look appropriate if there is a sense of proportion. And Natalia Vasko and the designers of this dress obviously have it.
Irma Vitovska also pleased us, and not only with her award for the best acting. The actress chose a dress with a high waist and a deep neckline which perfectly fits her figure opens enough attractiveness but nothing more. An elegant deep purple shade might be a bit dangerous for a blonde, but it’s located far enough away from the face. And here is the case when long, bright earrings are very appropriate and work perfectly with the silhouette.
And finally, let’s discuss the eternal. Catherine Deneuve. Imagine any other 75-year-old woman came to a red carpet of the OIFF in a trouser suit with a bright complex print, a lush decoration of feathers on the hips and with huge earrings made of transparent plastic in the ears. I guarantee local wits and couch critics would come up with a bunch of wits about this outfit. “A robbery of an ostrich farm took place in the suburbs of Odesa” and “There was a curtains sale on the 7th kilometer” – these would be the softest things that she would read about herself.
Catherine Deneuve is lucky to be a legend of world cinema, a real style icon, a friend and a muse of the great Yves Saint Laurent. And therefore, even the pickiest Ukrainian connoisseurs of fine taste will not move their tongue to reproach her with ignorance in style and non-compliance with the dress code. If, of course, these critics are educated enough to recognize the face of Catherine Deneuve.
Unfortunately, the OIFF is labeled with the dubious glory of the festival of bad taste, arrogance and freaks. First of all, because beautiful women and impeccable outfits are usually left behind the scenes, although there are getting more and more of them every year. But a bunch of unsuccessful and meaningless images from the red carpet of the festival are for some reason instantly replicated and widely discussed on the internet. And it is very insulting that in the pursuit of hype the media seek out the worst ones, discuss the bad taste of people who are actually not interesting to anyone. And they do not notice the talented, stylish and interesting personalities.
Life is actually better and brighter than we see it on social media. You just have to look closely.
