Patriarch Filaret asked Justice Minister Pavel Petrenko to continue registration of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC KP). Ministry of Culture reminded that such a church no longer exists.
“We have been informed that the Ministry of Justice intends to withdraw the registration of the UOC KP and deprive the legal person of the Kyiv Patriarchate of the UOC KP on the basis of the decision of the liquidation commission established by the leadership of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. Neither the management of the OCU nor the liquidation commission created by it has anything to do with the UOC KP, ” Filaret states in the letter.
He insists that on June 20, at the UOC KP Council, they adopted a resolution to continue the UOC KP’s activity and withdraw it from the UOC.
“Therefore, under the law on freedom of conscience, the UOC KP has the right to exist. We ask the Ministry of Justice to continue the existing registration of the UOC KP and the Kyiv Patriarchate of the UOC KP as a legal entity,” Filaret writes.
Instead, the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine confirmed the liquidation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate. On January 30, 2019, the Ministry of Culture declared the liquidation of the UOC KP based on the decisions of the UOC KP Local Council of December 15, 2018. Since then, it has become a part of the UOC.
“Although the religious unification of the UOC KP ceased its activity through unification and accession to the UOC, all functions of the statutory bodies of the former UOC KP were transferred to the competence of the relevant governing bodies of the UOC,” the Ministry of Culture added.
