Ukraine has informed all the major capitals of the world that there are no reasons for the restoration of the Group of Eight and the return of Russia to the informal club of the leading states. This was stated by the spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Kateryna Zelenko.
“Knowing that Ukraine will be an important topic on the agenda for the Group of Seven summit in Biarritz, France, we have worked at all levels in the capitals of the world, informing partners of any changes in Russia’s stance on ending aggression against Ukraine,” Zelenko emphasized.
The diplomat reminded that Russia was expelled from the Group of Eight precisely because of the beginning of the aggression against Ukraine and the occupation of Ukrainian territories.
“And you already see the first reaction of the partners: the return of Russia to the ranks of the Group of Eight is possible only if the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within the internationally recognized borders is restored. This was emphasized by the President of Ukraine, and this position is supported by our international partners,” Zelenko stated.
“We do not see any sign that Russia is ready for any action in this direction. In the last few weeks, Ukraine has lost 8 troops as a result of hostile shelling, Crimea remains occupied, over 100 Ukrainians are illegally detained by Russia as political prisoners, and passport aggression in the Donbas continues,” the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.
